Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya has confirmed that she will repay approximately R270,000 that was overpaid to her during her time as an official of the City of Tshwane.

The development comes after months of questions from the Democratic Alliance (DA), which has been pressing the mayor on the matter since January 2025. According to the DA, Mayor Moya initially committed in June to provide clarity but later ignored follow-up correspondence.

On Tuesday of august 26, the DA released a public statement demanding answers. A day later of August 27, Mayor Moya responded in writing. Acknowledging that she was one of several officials who had not yet paid back undue salary payments made by the City.

Most of the officials implicated in the salary overpayments have already repaid the money, some made arrangements to do so. Mayor Moya’s confirmation makes her among the last of the group to comply.

DA Tshwane spokesperson for finance, Cllr Jacqui Uys, said “it was unfortunate that the mayor had to be publicly pressured into action.  It is regrettable that Mayor Moya had to be prompted publicly to do what is right, instead of setting an example of accountability.”

“This is not the first time Mayor Moya has been asked to reimburse funds. She previously repaid R10,000 received for an international trip that she ultimately did not attend,” said Uys. The DA has pledged to continue monitoring the matter to ensure the repayment is made in full.
