Walmart has announced that it will open its first branded stores in South Africa later this year, marking an important step in the retail giant’s entry into the African market. The move aims to increase access to high-quality, cheap items while also providing chances for local suppliers and communities.

The announcement comes after Walmart’s inaugural Growth Summit in April, which brought together suppliers from 12 African countries and resulted in the recruitment of small and medium-sized enterprises. The new South African stores will sell everything from fresh food and household staples to clothes, technology, and international brands, as well as locally sourced products that showcase the country’s unique culture.

Kath McLay, President and CEO of Walmart International said that the stores will have bright design, broad aisles, and Walmart’s distinctive customer service, providing shoppers with an exciting and inexpensive retail experience.

With sites already under development, the first stores are slated to open by the end of 2025, with formal opening dates to be announced in October. Customers should also expect improved digital purchasing options, which will supplement the in-store experience.

Miles Van Rensburg, president and CEO of Massmart, stressed Walmart’s Every Day Low Price philosophy, stating it will help establish customer confidence while providing excellent products at low costs. He also said that the organization is dedicated to making a good difference in South African communities by investing in local entrepreneurs, food security projects, disaster relief operations, and employment opportunities.

Globally, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation prioritize economic mobility, sustainable supply chains, and resilient local communities. That objective will be extended to South Africa, with investments targeted at promoting growth, supporting local causes, and establishing long-term partnerships.

Walmart, which serves 270 million people each week in 19 countries through more than 10,750 shops and online platforms, says it is thrilled to bring its brand to South Africa and contribute to the local economy through retail opportunities and community development.
